Museums in Maremma Toscana

A generous land, rich and not exclusively for its natural beauty. Maremma life and history and it exists also thanks the memory that its museums preserve and pass on to generations. Among mountains, hills and sea the existence of peoples took place, conquests and defeats were seen in a succession of dominations. The huge amount of archaeological remains and finds has led to the birth of many museums scattered throughout this area of Tuscany. Stories of civilizations, which births is often bounded to the birth of the villages and towns we know today, are commonly intertwined with each other. Buildings, fortresses, architectural styles certificate the alternation of cultures and customs that have come down to the present day.

The museum network of the Tuscan Maremma is wide and varied. There are many exhibitions that can satisfy all visitors including children. Numerous museums of art and archeology are scattered throughout the territory and we certainly recommend a visit to the interesting archaeological areas, among which the one of Roselle near Grosseto and the other one in Vetulonia near Castiglione della Pescaia stand out: an opportunity to retrace the history of the civilizations that inhabited these lands in the past.

Equally interesting for adults and children are the museums dedicated to the mining activity that has characterized the history of the Maremma area in the late decades and especially the MAGMA, the museum of cast iron arts of the Maremma, which we have already talked about in our blog and which offers educational courses and workshops suitable for children.

If you are in the Castiglione della Pescaia area, we also recommend a visit to the well-known Casa Rossa Ximenes, to enjoy the beauty of the culture, but also the incredible landscapes surrounding the museum. Upon booking, it is also possible to take a boat trip, a very pleasant and entertaining occasion, especially for the great variety of fauna in the area.

Cast Iron Arts of the Maremma, which we have already talked about in our blog and which offers educational tours and workshops. suitable for children.

Many museums in the Maremma are easily accessible from our farmhouses and can be visited with the whole family. An example is the Natural History Museum of Maremma (GR), which houses collections of mineralogy, paleontology, zoology and prehistory.

Remaining on a naturalistic theme, it is worth visiting the Gavorrano Mining Museum, just 20 minutes away from our facilities, located in the Grosseto’s Metalliferous Hills National Park. It is a special visit because the museum is actually housed in a tunnel dug into the rock, once a deposit of explosives. The visit is always possible with the accompaniment of a specialized guide, to illustrate the typical day of a miner.
